Geschlechterforschung, postkoloniale Ansätze, Queer und Disability Studies, Ungleichheitsforschung und andere Forschungsfelder, die eng mit den Geschichtswissenschaften und der Geschichtsdidaktik verknüpft sind, verwenden seit einigen Jahren Intersektionalität als theoretische, methodische und inhaltliche Perspektive. Die Diskussion um das Zusammenwirken verschiedener Dimensionen sozialer Ungleichheit wie Geschlecht, Klasse, race hat jedoch schon eine längere Tradition und ist durch den Black Feminism seit den 1970er Jahren theoretisiert und empirisch fundiert worden. Dieses Themenheft soll einen Beitrag dazu leisten, Intersektionalität als Analysedimension in den Geschichtswissenschaften und der Geschichtsdidaktik weiter zu etablieren. Dem vielschichtigen Konzept Intersektionalität entsprechend fokussieren sich die Beiträge auf Fallstudien aus unterschiedlichen historischen Epochen und aus der Geschichtsdidaktik. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei die Frage, welche Vor- und Nachteile sich aus der Anwendung von Intersektionalität als Untersuchungsperspektive, Methode und Theorie für die empirische geschichtswissenschaftliche und geschichtsdidaktische Forschung ergeben.

This article deals with the musical-cultural activities of the pianist, composer, and ethnomusicologist Yvette Grimaud (1921–2012). It explores Grimaud’s professional network, which she established as a student and young artist in Paris between the late 1930s and the early 1950s. It shows that Grimaud’s artistic identity and her self-concept coincided with this network well into her old age, and that the network could be reactivated without interruption in a different, new professional context after many years of inactivity.

This article makes intersectional approaches accessible to historical empirical research. It starts from the assumption that a better understanding of students’ learning conditions can be gained by not focusing exclusively on a single category of difference and its effects on historical learning, but by including complex, interdependent structures in research projects. For this purpose, intersectionality is first discussed from the perspective of history education theory in order to develop an approach for empirical intersectional analysis. This is then used to examine the biographical experiences of seven students with so-called intellectual disabilities. The focus of intersectional analysis is to understand intersectional interdependencies.

The perception and construction of difference are anthropological constants, but the categories and mechanisms through which this difference is produced are not. In order to understand these processes historically in the pre-modern era and make them useful for the teaching of contemporary history, this article proposes to establish the concept of intersectionality for the analysis of medieval sources. For this purpose, a late medieval Jerusalem pilgrimage report is used to critically examine the applicability of traditional categories of difference such as race, class, and gender. The article concludes with initial reflections on the potential of the concept of intersectionality as a mediating framework for renewed medieval didactics.

A teaching concept was implemented in the context of a course on the history of social work. The profession for women, which emerged in Austria in the 1920s, established itself primarily in the Youth Welfare Office. Two sources, the personal testimonies of Jewish female social workers who had to flee in the 1930s, provide an insight into the everyday life of this institution of the City of Vienna. Together with social work students, these sources were analysed using theories of intersectionality on a structural, symbolic, and individual level. In this way, complex discriminations and privileges in the institution’s mission between help and control were reconstructed.

Based on biographical-narrative interviews with two Black German women who grew up in the GDR and the FRG, this article discusses the potential of a (sociological) reconstructive-intersectional biographical approach for historical research. Within this approach, intersecting subject positionings are reconstructed in their genesis and specific manifestations in different contexts of origin. It shows how the historical, regional, and family backgrounds influence the weighting of the positions for the subjects. Furthermore, the life stories told are narratives about the aftermath of the colonial era and National Socialism, witnesses to German history after 1945 in the FRG and the GDR, and expressions of experiences of transformation. The chosen approach thus provides insights into the (everyday) histories and family memories from marginalized perspectives, thus revealing possible voids that have received little attention in research to date.

In October 1492, 27 Jews were burned at the stake near the small town of Sternberg, and all remaining Jewish inhabitants were expelled from the county of Mecklenburg on the north-eastern periphery of the Holy Roman Empire, because of an alleged case of Jewish host desecration. This article argues that an intersectional approach may be helpful to better understand the persuasiveness of such an accusation made by Christian contemporaries against their Jewish neighbours. It shows that the category “Jew”, when used by non-Jews to stress Jewish alterity, is characterized by an intersectional entanglement of religion, culture, and race that enabled the idea of Jewish collective guilt and inherited anti-Christian hostility. This image of the “murderous Jews” was used to legitimize various forms of violence against Jews as measures to allegedly protect the hegemonic majority society. The article also demonstrates that the hegemonic position that produced this antisemitic image is better described as “goyish”, because, although rooted in Christian anti-Judaism, it went against the Christian doctrinal norm of the time.

This paper calls for new historical methods to study disability from an intersectional historical perspective. The Linz “Institute for the Deaf and Dumb” serves as a case study with two nineteenth-century micro-biographies and a new semi-participative method involving the deaf community. The article aims to show to what extent the experiential knowledge of those affected can add value to the interpretation of disability history. The experiential knowledge is collected through a semi-participatory process. The procedure and the theoretical background are described and applied in the article.

This paper shows how intersectionality adds new perspectives to both German history and the global history of the Cold War by examining the Westdeutsche Frauenfriedensbewegung (West German Women’s Peace Movement, WFFB). It identifies five intersectional categories that shaped the WFFB’s political ideas and activities (gender, class, race, age, religion/ideology). Furthermore, it demonstrates how the WFFB viewed the intersection of inequalities and differences. Intersectional discourse analysis helps situate the WFFB within multiple historical processes such as women’s emancipation, decolonization, and the global Cold War.
